As you make your way across Hogwarts Legacy's open world, you're bound to run into locked doors and chests that you can't open as a fresh student. There are quite a few of them, too, and you'll need the Alohomora spell to trigger the lockpicking minigame that, once completed, lets you finally remove these obstacles from your path and add more goodies to your inventory.
Hogwarts Legacy's Alohomora spell and lockpicking minigame are impossible to miss, due to how they're part of one of the action-RPG's main quests. More specifically, you get introduced to both during The Caretaker's Lunar Lament, when you'll need to sneakily retrieve demiguise statues for Gladwin Moon, everyone's favorite caretaker.
Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora Spell and Lockpicking
Gladwin actually teaches you Alohomora himself, enabling you to interact with level 1 locks. Since it's one of several essential spells it, thankfully, does not take up a slot in your loadout.
Once you approach a lock and interact with it, you trigger Hogwarts Legacy's lockpicking minigame. Although it looks a bit overwhelming at first, it's all rather straightforward.
Your goal is to need two sparks into the right position and hold them there for a few seconds. The inner spark (red) makes the central mechanism of the puzzle rotate when you find its right position.
The outer spark (green) makes the lower right mechanism of the puzzle rotate when properly aligned. Finding the exact positions might require some finesse, but you can, in most cases, take your time with it.
Keeping both sparks aligned properly for a few seconds automatically opens the lock, letting you access whatever it is that it was guarding.
Gladwin Moon can also upgrade Hogwarts Legacy's Alohomora spell to allow you to interact with higher-level locks, provided you bring him enough demiguise moons.
