Publisher and developer Amazon Games has issued a statement on New World frying expensive Nvidia RTX 3090, explaining that its ongoing closed beta is "safe to play."
New World's closed beta drew the attention of 190,000 players on Steam and, while most of us had to deal with predictable launch day connection issues, server queues, and downtime due to maintenance, a set of players had a considerably worse time. EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra users started reporting their graphics cards dying out on them after attempting to see what Aeternum has to offer.
New World forum user Goatz pointed out in a post that the same thing also happened during the game's alpha. Several other players confirmed that their EVGA's RTX 3090 also got fried after trying to play New World's closed beta.
The issue does, however, seem to be tied to that particular graphics card model, and a statement sent over by Amazon Games suggests as much.
"Hundreds of thousands of people played in the New World Closed Beta yesterday, with millions of total hours played. We’ve received a few reports of players using high-performance graphics cards experiencing hardware failure when playing New World," the Amazon Games spokesperson said.
"New World makes standard DirectX calls as provided by the Windows API. We have seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing.
"The New World Closed Beta is safe to play. In order to further reassure players, we will implement a patch today that caps frames per second on our menu screen. We’re grateful for the support New World is receiving from players around the world, and will keep listening to their feedback throughout Beta and beyond."
If you own an EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra, you may want to exercise caution as far as New World's closed beta goes. Everyone else should be fine, although it never hurts to monitor your hardware's temperatures when first playing the game, to stay on the safe side.
The MMORPG's closed beta lasts until August 2 and is the final chance to try out the game before its launch at the end of next month.
